Neha Dhupia : Bye-bye To Lead Roles

Neha Dhupia
is certainly on a reinvention spree. She had two successful films to her name early this year in the form of MITHYA and SINGH IS KINNG. Now soon after the release of DASVIDANIYA, where she had a relatively smaller role to play though, she recently appeared in MAHARATHI. With the kind of films she is currently associated with, the ones where there isn't a conventional hero–heroine pairing, does it indicate bye–bye to lead roles?

"Tell me if you see actresses anyways doing something special in commercial films", Neha questions back.

Shahid Kapoor is VIP

Look who is being acknowledged as a VIP? It is none other than Shahid Kapoor. And no, it is not because his celebrity status is responsible for such special treatment. Neither is this because he is acting in a movie with VIP as its title. Instead, Shahid could well be conferred this title since he has been roped in as a brand ambassador of VIP luggage which is looking at reinventing itself in the face of competition from other new entrants in the market.

Confirms a source close to Shahid, "Yes, Shahid has indeed been signed as a brand ambassador for VIP and has even shot for a couple of commercials. He had stopped doing commercials for a few years but has been back with VIP since he liked the entire concept and their execution plan."

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi : Movie Review

It is Shahrukh Khan who lights up your life with his superb performance even though Aditya Chopra makes a mess of the heart-winning love story with an overdose of weepy melodrama in the second half of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi .

Friends! The director who made arguably the best Bollywood love story of the 90s ( Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge ) returns a slightly evolved filmmaker with realistic sensibilities that reek of Shimit Amin’s style in Chak De India , but not without the baggage of weepy sentimentality that has by now become synonymous with the Yashraj stamp. ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is a love story you almost want to believe in. And you do believe it until the film runs past the half-way mark, when the director tries to repeatedly unleash one tear-jerking moment after another on the popcorn munching audiences, thus robbing the story of its credulity.

Ghajini : Movie Preview

How do you go about avenging someone you don’t remember? Ghajini is one such tale of love and vengeance of a man who suffers from memory loss.

The movie, starring Aamir Khan , Asin and Jiah Khan , is inspired from director Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Memento’. Director A.R. Murugadoss first made the Tamil adaptation of the film Ghajini (Tamil) in 2005. Interestingly, Murugadoss hadn’t seen ‘Memento’ but only heard its story when he made the Tamil flick.

Oh My God : Movie Review

Bollywood
filmmakers seem hell-bent on bringing the almighty down to earth. In film after film we are made to believe that God – probably unemployed in the recession-hit heaven – has all the time in the world to mend the lives of mortal earthlings.

After Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic , the tortuous God Tussi Great Ho and the hellish Hello , Oh, My God!! is yet another tale of divine intervention in the life of a protagonist who prays to God but doesn’t want His help at the cost of his morals.

Vinay Pathak plays Rajendra Dubey, a salesman with big dreams of becoming another Ambani someday. He has many money-making schemes that no one seems interested in. His wife ( Divya Dutta ) prays to the almighty for help. And lo and behold, God ( Saurabh Shukla ), dressed in all white, comes down himself to hand over bags of money to Dubey and also munch on some fast food and confectionary during His earthly sojourn.

Meerabai Not Out : Movie Review

Too many silly points mar this overblown tale of a woman who is crazy about cricket.

Meerabai Not Out is a film that causes embarrassment to the people watching it. More than that, it tests your patience with the slow pace of its utterly predictable plot. You know beforehand how the story’s going to wind up. Yet, you sit yawning and watching the proceeding on the screen with the same boredom as you see a five-day match drag to a lackluster draw.

The film’s central character Meerabai ( Mandira Bedi ) is a maths teacher whose life revolves around the game of cricket and its icon Anil Kumble. So much so that she prefers fantasies of Kumble to real men in flesh and blood. Obviously it’s a cause for concern for Meera’s close-knit family that has an elder brother ( Mahesh Manjrekar ), a disillusioned ex-cricketer who has come to hate the game.

Sorry Bhai : Movie Review

Making a movie on a subject with incestuous connotations, even though slight, is always a tricky job. One might end up putting the audiences off.

But, expectedly, Onir displays sensitivity in walking the thin line and telling his story as a tale of relationships between different characters rather than a plain tale of forbidden love.

That’s what makes Sorry Bhai worth a watch. It’s about the complexities of relationships. Not the kind of complexities one sees splashed out dramatically in usual Bollywood melodramas. But the kind that one normally sees in life. That subtle tug or snap in relationships when people are drawn towards or pulled away from each other. That gradual mushrooming of an emotion towards another person. These very moments captured with a telling effect provide the soul to ‘Sorry Bhai’ even though the film gets a little too tangled in the second half.

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye : Movie Review

A thief was never so lovable before in Bollywood as it is in director Dibakar Banerjee’s immensely entertaining film about a kleptomaniac who steals not just for greed, but for fame as well.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! , the title itself gives us a peek into a lower middle-class Punjabi family in Delhi. Lucky, the second son of a foreign-returned authoritarian baap (Paresh Rawal), is a boy who looks longingly at the world of the rich. Without the slightest pang of conscience he begins to nick petty things and grows to be a cool-headed thief who steals everything from TVs, cars, jewellery to cutlery, clothes, furniture, and even dogs. Nothing escapes the dexterous hands of Lucky ( Abhay Deol ).

Salman Finds Katrina's Look-alike: Fact Or Fiction!

Just a few days back media was abuzz with the news that Anil Sharma's costume action extravaganza, VEER, starring Salman Khan in the title role, was all set to feature a new leading lady. The USP of the leading lady was that she was supposed to be Salman Khan's good friend Katrina Kaif's look–alike. The media (read telly) even flashed pictures of a starlet, Amrit as the (supposed) look–alike leading lady.

However, this is far from the truth. Amrit is not the leading lady of VEER. The lucky lady is Zarine Khan, and as per Salman Khan himself, she does not resemble Katrina Kaif at all. Salman adds that Zarine is also not at all like Amrit, whose picture was flashed on television as his VEER co–star.

Dasvidaniya : Movie Review

Director Shashant Shah’s movie Dasvidaniya is a slow but heart-wrenching tale of a 37-year-old man who has few months left to live and sets out to live it to the fullest before he says his final goodbye.

The movie, though not based on a novel premise, works because of actor Vinay Pathak ’s emphatic performance as a dying man with an ironic name Amar, and because of the finely etched-out characters in the story. It also works because the protagonist Amar Kaul is a simple, submissive man who learns to live fully only when death stares at him in face. It’s a character that you empathize and sympathize with. It’s a character you laugh and weep with. That precisely is what keeps you hooked to the screen even when the movie hits a few bumps and begins to drag in the second half.

Amar (Vinay Pathak) is a meek and unambitious man working for a bullying boss ( Saurabh Shukla ) and living with a mother (Sarita Joshi) who’s hard of hearing. Amar lives a dull, mundane existence. His life changes after he finds out that he has only three months left to live. Thereafter, the simpleton draws a list of things to do before he dies.

Dostana : Movie Review

‘Dostana’
rocks when it’s funny. But it shocks when you see a nicely developed plot lose its substance and become just a bland and emotionless tale of friendship and love in the second half.

You have to have a slightly cheeky sense of humour to like a film like Dostana , which is packed with over-the-top gay gags and ample gloss to glaze your eyes. There’s Shilpa Shetty in half-covered bikinis, Priyanka Chopra in beachwear and John Abraham in pulled-down (not all the way) underwear. If that doesn’t interest you (which I doubt), the humour in ‘Dostana’ would entertain you enough to sit through the length of the film without much bum adjustment.

The problem is that all the bonhomie and hilarity in ‘Dostana’ fail to culminate into a story that touches you.
